Scholastic Parent & Child magazine released a new list of 100 great books for kids and gave the top spot to Charlotte’s Web, E.B. White’s classic children’s novel about a girl and a talking spider who join forces to save a pig from slaughter. Charlotte’s Web edged out the ubiquitous picture book Goodnight Moon. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone represented J.K. Rowling’s entire series in the No. 6 spot, and The Hunger Games, one of the newer titles on the list, claimed No. 33. I do applaud the exclusion of the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer — not all wildly popular franchises deserve to make the cut.

The list is meant to “generate controversy and conversation,” said Parent & Child editor-in-chief Nick Friedman.

Blakeley Jones, 34, of Charlotte and Emily O’Brien, 27, of Chapel Hill will appear on the popular romance reality show featuring Flajnik, 29, a winemaker from Sonoma who was the runner-up in the show’s last edition, dumped at the end by Ashley Hebert.

Jones, a native of Rutherfordton, has a long-haired Chihuahua for a pet; her favorite actor is Edward Norton; and she’s got tattoos on her foot, stomach, back and arm, ABC said in an online profile.

Among the other contestants this season are three nurses, a model and a personal trainer.

ABC said Wednesday that O’Brien gets the season’s first kiss, but as a “germ-conscious epidemiologist,” she reaches for the sanitizer beforehand. A PhD candidate who enjoys zumba dancing, O’Brien also does a rap song on the first episode that she wrote specially for the occasion, the network said.

Charlotte is a popular recruiting ground for “The Bachelor.” Last spring, Emily Maynard of Charlotte got the proposal from second-time bachelor Brad Womack, but the romance didn’t last. Kimberly Coon, a Charlotte marketing specialist and former Top Cat dancer, was sent home by Womack earlier in the same season.

In 2007, Kristine Heffelfinger, a Charlotte fitness instructor, was eliminated before the final rose.

Three men have been charged with murder and robbery after police said two men were reported missing from their northwest Charlotte home this week.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have released few details about the case but identified the victims, apparently relatives, as Benjamin Acahua-Itehua, 39, and Floriberto Acahua-Itehua, 32.

Police would not said how they were killed or even whether their bodies have been found.

But in Florence County, S.C., the sheriff’s office announced Wednesday that they were working with Charlotte-Mecklenburg police in a homicide investigation after what they believe are human remains were discovered near Timmonsville, S.C.

“The investigation is in the very much early stages and we are unable to say more at this time,” according to a statement from the Florence County Sheriff’s Office.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police had not confirmed any connection between the investigations.

The Charlotte investigation began Monday night when a man called police and said he had not seen or spoken to his cousin in several days. Officers went to his cousin’s home near the 11200 block of Mt. Holly Road, where police said they discovered evidence of foul play. Police also said they found that items were missing from the home, including the victims’ vehicles.

As police investigated at the home Monday, another man arrived to check on his employee who had not come to work.

On Tuesday, investigators remained at the home and were seen searching the property and removing evidence from the house. Police told Observer news partner WCNC-TV that several other people lived in the home but none of them had returned since police began investigating.

On Wednesday, police announced they developed suspects in the case and had arrested three men with the help of police in Fayetteville and Florence County, S.C.

Aquilino Tzompaxtle, 20, Dominick Vershon Cole, 26, and Efrain Tzompaxtle, 23, are each charged with two counts of murder and armed robbery. Police said the men will be transported to Mecklenburg jail.

Police did not describe a motive in the apparent double killing but said the suspects and victims knew each other.
